Violence fuels public panic in South Surma

Recent violent and sensational incidents in South Surma, Sylhet, have fueled growing anxiety and concern among the general public.

Two major events, occurring within just a few days of each other, have left local residents feeling deeply insecure.

Such recurring incidents have raised serious questions regarding public safety, the state of law and order, and the effectiveness of the authorities responsible for crime control.

According to relevant sources, on the morning of Friday (November 6) police recovered the bloodied body of Haji Nurul Islam (65), a philanthropist and social worker from the bathroom of a rented house in the Kayesthrail area of South Surma.

A blood-stained cleaver was found beside the body. While the police initially suspect the death to be a suicide linked to mental health issues, the incident has sparked deep mystery and alarm among the local community and expatriates.

On the evening of the same day, Geda Mia (65), a local BNP leader and community mediator was hacked to death in Lakshmipur village, under Tetli Union (Ward No. 3). The attack stemmed from a long-standing dispute involving the management committees of a local mosque and school.

Md. Afzal Hossain, Media Officer (DC, CTSB) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, did not answer multiple calls seeking his comments on the overall situation.

When contacted regarding this matter, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sarwar Murshed Shamim suggested speaking at a later time.

Reports also indicate that homes were vandalised and looted during the incident, which left at least 10 others injured. This brazen and brutal assault in a populated area has spread panic throughout the locality.
