Iqbal Sobhan sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, former information adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, to be sent to jail in a murder case filed over the killing of madrasa student Arif during the July uprising in the capital’s Jatrabari area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after a hearing. Mohin Uddin, a sub-inspector of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Prosecution Division, confirmed the development.

Earlier, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Amir Hossain of Jatrabari Police Station, the investigation officer in the case, produced Iqbal before the court and sought an order to keep him in jail.

The accused’s lawyers sought bail, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail application and ordered that he be sent to jail.

On Wednesday afternoon, police detained Iqbal, chairman of private television channel DBC News, from the channel’s office in Mohakhali. He was later shown arrested in the case.

According to the case statement, Arif, a first-year Alim student at Lord Hardinge Fazil Madrasa, was shot in the eye on July 19, 2024, during a clash between police and Awami League leaders and activists on Boubazar Road in the Kutubkhali area of Jatrabari.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.

Following the incident, Arif’s father, Yusuf, filed a murder case with Jatrabari Police Station on August 25, 2024, against 233 people, including Sheikh Hasina. Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury is listed as accused No. 53 in the case.
