29 wards at high risk of dengue

Twenty-nine of the 75 wards under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have been identified as high-risk areas for dengue transmission, while 28 are at moderate risk and 18 at low risk, according to a survey.

The survey was conducted by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) through its 36 field workers between September 27 and October 8.

DSCC Chief Health Officer Dr Jahane Ferdous Binte Rahman presented the findings.

DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam disclosed the findings at an event held at the Nagar Bhaban Auditorium in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.

A total of 36 DSCC field workers collected data from September 27 to October 8. They surveyed 2,250 households, selecting 30add households from each ward.

Presenting the survey findings, DSCC Chief Health Officer Dr Jahane Ferdous Binte Rahman said Aedes mosquito larvae and pupae were found in 403 households.

The survey also identified different types of mosquito breeding sites across the city.

According to the findings, 31.6 per cent of the identified breeding sites were in multi-storey buildings, while 31.37 per cent were in standalone houses.

Semi-pucca houses accounted for 17.39 per cent of the breeding sites, while 13.4 per cent were found in buildings under construction.

Vacant plots were also identified as places where Aedes mosquitoes could breed.

The findings highlight the presence of mosquito breeding sites in different types of residential buildings and vacant properties across DSCC areas.

Stagnant water on floors accounted for 12.26 percent of breeding sources, while water stored in buckets accounted for 10.34 percent.

Speaking at the event, Abdus Salam urged residents to keep their homes and workplaces clean and remove stagnant water at least once a week, saying government initiatives alone would not be enough to prevent dengue.
