DSCC begins E-rickshaw registration
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a registration process for battery-powered, low-speed three-wheeled rickshaws, aiming to bring their movement under control, reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety.
Application forms will be distributed from November 3 at Tk 100 each. Applicants can collect the forms from Nagar Bhaban and all regional offices of the city corporation.
The registration process is being conducted under the ‘Rules for the Movement of Three-Wheeled Low-Speed Battery-Powered Rickshaws (E-Rickshaws) in City Corporation Areas, 2026’, recently issued by the Local Government Division.
DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam announced the initiative at a press briefing at Nagar Bhaban on Monday.
He said the corporation had taken the initiative to ensure orderly movement of e-rickshaws and safer travel for city residents.
However, collecting an application form would not guarantee registration, he said. Vehicles would receive registration certificates only after meeting the required conditions, following Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) technical standards and passing the necessary checks.
He said the main goal was to bring all e-rickshaws under the rules in phases and reduce the number of unauthorised and unsuitable vehicles on the roads.
Applicants must be Bangladeshi citizens. They will have to submit an attested copy of their national identity card (NID), two recently taken passport-size photographs, the original fee payment receipt and a fitness certificate in the prescribed format.
Each applicant will be allowed to collect a maximum of five application forms and seek registration for five e-rickshaws against one NID.
The corporation said vehicles would have to undergo checks against the technical standards and safety requirements set by BUET. Obtaining technical clearance from the university will be mandatory.
DSCC also plans to divide its area into four zones to determine routes and control the number of e-rickshaws operating in each zone.
The zone-based system will be introduced after discussions with traffic police and other relevant stakeholders.
The city corporation expects the proper implementation of the new rules to help establish a cleaner, more organised and people-friendly transport system in Dhaka South.
It has called on city residents and all relevant stakeholders to cooperate with the registration process.
