DU tops Bangladesh
Dhaka University (DU) has retained its position as the country’s top-ranked university in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027, securing 136th place among universities across Asia and 16th in South Asia.
The latest rankings were published on November 3 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a UK-based global higher education research organisation, according to a DU press release issued on Wednesday.
DU also topped the list of Bangladeshi universities in the previous year’s rankings.
A total of 1,722 universities from 26 Asian countries were assessed for this edition.
The University of Hong Kong secured the first position, followed by China’s Peking University in second place.
Expressing satisfaction over the achievement, DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam said the university’s position in the international rankings was a matter of pride.
He said retaining the top position among Bangladeshi universities reflected the collective efforts of teachers, students, researchers and others involved with the institution.
However, the vice-chancellor said the university’s goal was not limited to maintaining its current position but also to strengthening its international standing by improving the quality of education and research.
He identified improvements to the academic and research environment, expansion of research facilities and international collaboration, and creating opportunities for students to develop skills that meet global standards as key priorities for the university administration.
He also called on teachers, students, alumni and other stakeholders to work together to achieve these goals.
The QS Asia University Rankings assess universities based on several performance indicators, including academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact and quality, the proportion of staff holding PhD degrees, international research networks and international student and faculty ratios.
