JnU celebrates 21st founding anniversary

Jagannath University (JnU) celebrated its 21st founding anniversary on Monday with a series of programmes, including an Anand Rally, art exhibitions, a discussion meeting and cultural performances.

The day began at 9am with the national anthem, followed by the hoisting of the national and university flags at the university’s Shaheed Minar premises.

Later, the vice-chancellor formally inaugurated the University Day by releasing balloons and pigeons. The rally, led by the vice-chancellor, then started from the campus and ended at Raisaheb Bazar intersection and Victoria Park.

This year’s anniversary theme was ‘Turning-Unified Jabian’.
The university marked its founding anniversary on November 2 instead of October 20 this year.

The date is linked to the announcement by then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia on November 2, 1995, regarding the transformation of Jagannath College into a university.

As part of the celebrations, the Faculty of Fine Arts opened an exhibition of artworks and paintings at 10am on the ground floor of the Shaheed Sajid Academic Building.

A discussion meeting was later held at the university’s Central Auditorium. A doa mahfil was also organised at the Central Jama Masjid at noon.

The cultural programme began at 3pm, featuring performances by the university’s music and drama departments, cultural centre, recitation parliament, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi, JnU Sangsad and Rangabhumi.

Several bands, including Offside, Komal Gandhar, Kimbut and Swarup, also performed alongside the university’s Band Music Association. Nagarbaul James was scheduled to perform at an evening concert as the closing event of the celebrations.

The day-long programmes were attended by the general secretary of the university’s teachers’ association, directors of different faculties and institutes, departmental chairmen, the registrar, controller of examinations, provosts, proctor, teachers, students, officials and employees.

Jagannath University has a long institutional history, having evolved from a school into a college and later into a university. It has now completed 21 years as a university and entered its 22nd year.
