No more warnings for illegal hawkers, says DSCC Administrator

Administrator Abdus Salam says another eviction drive will be held in New Market next week as the city corporation steps up cleanliness and mosquito control efforts

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator and freedom fighter Abdus Salam has warned that authorities will take legal action and seize goods from shops illegally occupying roads and footpaths, without issuing further requests.

Abdus Salam said illegal hawkers and makeshift shops were major contributors to traffic congestion, indiscriminate waste disposal and obstruction to pedestrian movement.

He made the remarks on Saturday while attending a special mosquito control and cleanliness drive organised by the DSCC as part of its weekly ‘Cleaning Day’.

The programme was conducted simultaneously in all 75 wards under the corporation. “Dhaka residents and the city corporation want relief from these sufferings. There is no scope for occupying roads and footpaths in the name of humanitarian considerations,” he said.

He warned that goods would be seized and legal action taken against those operating shops outside the rules set by the DSCC.

Regarding the removal of illegal structures from roads and footpaths in the New Market area, he said another eviction drive would be conducted there next week. He also made it clear that hawkers would not be allowed to occupy roads under any circumstances.

Highlighting the importance of dengue prevention and environmental protection, the DSCC administrator said regular cleaning was essential to controlling the disease.

“There is no alternative to cleanliness in controlling dengue. Water must not be allowed to remain stagnant anywhere for more than three days,” he said.

He added that awareness rallies and campaigns would continue alongside cleanliness drives to protect the capital’s environment, control air pollution and reduce traffic congestion.

The cleanliness drive began in front of the Malibagh CID Office and passed through Shantinagar, Kakrail and Nayapaltan before ending in Fakirapul.

Along the route, Abdus Salam inspected the removal of accumulated waste and the eviction of illegal shops.

Local residents joined the daylong programme alongside the city corporation’s regular cleaning and mosquito control workers. Microphone announcements and awareness rallies were also held in different wards to encourage public participation in cleanliness and mosquito control efforts.
