Coast Guard rescues 4 fishermen in Sundarbans

The Coast Guard has rescued four fishermen who were held hostage by the notorious Samrat Bahini pirate group in the Sundarbans, following a special operation in the forest on Sunday.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon disclosed the information on Monday.

The rescue operation was conducted by the Coast Guard Outpost Nalian at around 2:00pm on October 11 near Arbania Canal along the Shibsa River in the Sundarbans under Dacope upazila of Khulna, acting on a tip-off about the presence of the pirate group in the area, said a press release.

During the operation, Coast Guard personnel rescued the four fishermen from the pirates’ custody. However, the suspected pirates fled deep into the forest, leaving the hostages behind after sensing the presence of the Coast Guard. No one was arrested during the operation.

During preliminary questioning, the rescued fishermen said they had gone to the Sundarbans on October 10 to catch fish and crabs when members of Samrat Bahini abducted them. The pirates allegedly held them hostage and tortured them in an attempt to extort ransom.

The rescued fishermen were identified as Moinur, 50, Badsha Gazi, 39, Sujon Hossain, 34, and Imam ul Mallik, 22. All four are residents of Paikgachha upazila in Khulna district.

The process of handing over the rescued fishermen to their families was underway, the Coast Guard official said.

According to the Coast Guard, two special operations, titled “Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans” and “Operation Mangrove Shield,” are being conducted under the directives of the current government to eliminate active pirate groups in the Sundarbans and ensure security in coastal areas.

The Coast Guard expressed hope that the Sundarbans could be made completely free of pirates through the government’s directives, public cooperation and coordinated efforts by other law enforcement agencies.
