16 BAU researchers named among world’s top 2pc scientists

Sixteen teachers and researchers of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have been included in the 2026 updated list of the world’s top two percent of scientists, placing the university third among Bangladeshi institutions.

The list, prepared by researchers at Stanford University in the United States in collaboration with Netherlands-based academic publisher Elsevier, was released on Wednesday.

A total of 347 researchers from 88 universities and research institutions in Bangladesh were included in the latest ranking.

The University of Dhaka topped the national ranking with 22 researchers, followed by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) with 20. BAU ranked third with 16 researchers.

The 2026 list was primarily prepared based on the citation impact of research publications in 2025. The 16 BAU researchers were recognised based on their research impact during the single-year assessment period.

The BAU researchers included in the list are Professor Dr Md Shahjahan of the Department of Fisheries Management, Professor Dr Ehsanul Kabir of the Department of Farm Power and Machinery, Professor Dr Md Abdul Hannan of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Assistant Professor Md Fazle Rohani of the Department of Aquaculture, Professor Dr Md Tanvir Rahman of the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene, Professor Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossain of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, and Professor Dr SM Lutful Kabir of the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene.

Others are Professor Dr KM Golam Dastagir of the Department of Plant Pathology, Associate Professor Dr Md Tahzib-ul-Arif of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Professor Dr Muhammad Mahfuzul Haque of the Department of Aquaculture, Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman Khan of the Department of Agricultural Finance and Banking,

Professor Dr Abdul Majid, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Associate Professor Dr Tumpa Rani Sarker of the Department of Farm Power and Machinery, Professor Dr Humayun Kabir of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Associate Professor Dr Mohammad Saidur Rahman of the Department of Seed Science and Technology, and Professor Dr Mohammad Nuruzzaman of the Department of Pathology.

The international database, prepared under the leadership of Stanford University researcher John P A Ioannidis, evaluates researchers separately based on their overall career-long research impact and their research impact in a specific year.

The inclusion of 16 BAU researchers in the prestigious international list is seen as a significant indication of the university’s growing global visibility and research strength.
