Dengue death toll nearly 300

It claims five more lives
A mother is seen taking care of her fever-stricken child at the city's Mugda Medical College and Hospital on Thursday, as Bangladesh continues to grapple with the dengue burden.

Dengue claimed five more lives and sent another 1,935 patients to hospitals across Bangladesh in the 24 hours to 8:00am on Thursday, taking the country’s death toll to 294 and total hospital admissions to 94,151 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the five latest deaths, three were reported in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the highest among the reported areas, while two were recorded in Khulna division. No deaths were reported from the other divisions or city corporations in the same 24-hour period, according to the DGHS data.

The latest hospital admissions were reported from all eight divisions. Dhaka division recorded 382 admissions, followed by Khulna with 292, Chattogram with 280, Rajshahi with 206, Barishal with 195, Mymensingh with 93, Rangpur with 64 and Sylhet with 15.

The latest figures showed a sharp acceleration in dengue deaths at the beginning of October. A total of 45 people died of the disease during the first eight days of the month, from October 1 to October 8.

The October toll so far has already surpassed the number of deaths recorded during the entire months of June, July and August. Dengue killed 13 people in June, 36 in July and 43 in August. September was the deadliest month, with 148 deaths. From January to May, dengue claimed five lives in total.

The daily death figures showed how rapidly the situation worsened in early October. Four people died on October 1, followed by one on October 2, six on October 3 and six on October 4.

The daily toll then rose to nine on October 5 and reached 10 on October 6-the highest single-day dengue death toll recorded this year. Eight more deaths were reported on October 7, followed by another five on October 8.

The October 6 figure was particularly significant, as the 10 deaths in a single 24-hour period marked the highest daily toll of the year. On that day, 1,996 new dengue patients were hospitalised, taking the cumulative number of hospital admissions to 90,356 and the death toll to 281.

The surge continued over the following two days. Eight people died and 1,860 were hospitalised in the 24 hours to 8:00am on October 7, taking the death toll to 289 and the cumulative number of hospitalisations to 92,216. On October 8, another five deaths and 1,935 new admissions were recorded, bringing the cumulative figures to 294 deaths and 94,151 hospitalisations.

The DGHS figures also show the broader rise in dengue deaths over the year. After only five deaths from January through May, the monthly toll climbed to 13 in June, 36 in July, 43 in August and 148 in September.

The September figure was the highest monthly death toll recorded in 2026 before October began.

The latest data indicate that October has started with a markedly higher death rate than the preceding months. In just eight days, its 45 deaths have exceeded the full-month totals of June, July and August, although September remains higher overall with 148 deaths.
