Govt plans to overhaul existing Edu system

The government is moving forward with plans to overhaul the country’s existing education system. Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milan stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working by prioritizing education above all else.

Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milan said, the government is considering a coupon system to curb irregularities and corruption in primary school mid-day meals. Each primary school student would be issued a coupon worth Tk 38.50, allowing children to purchase food of their choice from enlisted local food vendors.

He made these remarks on Saturday afternoon (October 3) at a discussion meeting titled “Public Thoughts on the Development of Kachua,” held at the Mother Language Institute in the capital.

Senior BNP leader Nazmun Nahar Baby and journalist leader Jahangir Alam Pradhan were present at the event.

Noting that this initiative aims to involve local entrepreneurs, the Education Minister stated that local business owners would be enlisted based on their capacity.

She added that if students do not find food to their liking at the listed shops or with the registered vendors, they are not obliged to make a purchase.

The value of the coupon will remain with the student. This plan is currently in the preliminary stage; the ministry will make a decision after further discussions.

The Education Minister announced that new textbooks would be handed over to primary and secondary students in January 2027. Emphasis is being placed on using high-quality paper and ink this time to ensure the quality of the books.

Milan stated that 300,000 books were returned to publishers due to poor quality. Action will be taken if any publisher’s work is found to be substandard.

Furthermore, if complaints regarding irregularities or negligence arise even after the books have been distributed, action will be taken against those responsible.

At the event, A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milan also spoke about free textbooks for students. He stated that the quality of the books is being verified at five different levels. Any book found to have poor paper quality is being rejected; so far, 3 million books have been discarded. Despite this, many are still attempting to supply substandard books.

However, even if the books are ultimately handed over to the students, the ministry will take action against the printers concerned if the quality is found to be poor.
