Ex-Jubo dal leader, 4 others remanded

A Dhaka court on Friday placed four people, including expelled Jubo Dal leader Ferdous Ahmed Saimon, on remand in a case filed over allegations of extortion, assault and firing blank shots in the Bangla Motor area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan passed the order after a hearing in the afternoon, granting four days’ remand to Saimon, the prime accused, and three days each to the other three accused.

The other accused are Omar, 32, Morshed, 25, and Md Shaon, 25, said SI Arif Reza of the prosecution department.

He said no lawyer appeared for the accused during the remand hearing.

Earlier in the day, SI Md Nasim, the investigation officer of Hatirjheel police station, produced the four accused before the court and sought seven days’ remand for each for the sake of a proper investigation.

According to the case statement, the incident occurred around 7:15pm on Thursday in front of a house in New Eskaton area under Hatirjheel police station. The statement alleges that Saimon stopped Md Sohan and demanded Tk50,000 in extortion. When Sohan refused to pay, Saimon allegedly pointed a pistol at his chest and attempted to shoot him.

He allegedly then struck Sohan on the head with the butt of the pistol, while the other accused allegedly assaulted him. They reportedly left the scene after people nearby approached.

Sohan received first aid at a local pharmacy. Later, while he was travelling for further treatment, his brother-in-law Md Moktar Hossain joined him.

The case statement alleges that Saimon and the other accused later arrived on motorcycles and again attempted to assault Sohan. Moktar was also allegedly beaten when he tried to intervene.

The remand application states that Saimon fired three blank shots from the pistol during the incident. Local residents then chased and detained several of the accused.

Saimon was also detained while allegedly attempting to flee. Police later arrived at the scene and took the accused into custody.

Sohan subsequently filed the case with Hatirjheel police station.

According to the police remand application, preliminary investigation found the accused to be active members of an alleged organised extortion and criminal group.

Police said they needed to be interrogated on remand to identify other people allegedly involved, locate absconding suspects and recover information and evidence related to the case.

The application also stated that the accused face several drug-related cases filed with Hatirjheel and Kalabagan police stations.
