Urmi Group to participate in BGMEA Cup 2026 with its own team
Urmi Group is set to participate in the BGMEA Cup 2026 with its own football team. Players selected through the player draft held on 19 September will take the field for Team Urmi Group in the upcoming tournament.
Ahead of the tournament, Urmi Group hosted a meet-and-greet session with the players at its corporate office on Thursday, where the company’s senior management welcomed the squad. Team Urmi Group will begin its preparation matches from 2 October.
The session was attended by Faiaz Rahman, Director of Urmi Group; Mir Ashraful Hossain, Group COO; Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Badrul Amin, Advisor to the Managing Director; and Nayeem Akhter, COO of Turaag Active, alongside the players who will represent Urmi Group in the tournament.
The discussion focused on the team’s preparations, expectations and participation in the upcoming competition. Emphasis was also placed on strengthening team bonding and building a stronger connection between the players and the organisation they will represent on the field.
Urmi Group Director Faiyaz Rahman said the company’s involvement in sports has gradually evolved from sponsoring events to supporting the long-term development of athletes.
“For the past six years, Urmi Group and Turaag Active have been involved with athletes and sporting events across disciplines, including marathon, chess, squash, football, boxing, golf and triathlon,” Rahman said.
“What started with sponsoring and supporting sporting events is now moving towards a longer-term commitment to developing athletes and nurturing promising sporting talent.
“As a squash player myself, I understand how important recognition, encouragement and institutional support can be for an athlete. We therefore want to play a more proactive role in identifying and developing promising squash players, with the broader ambition of helping them compete at the international level and bring greater recognition to Bangladesh on the global stage.”
Rahman said talent and hard work alone are not always enough to help athletes reach their full potential.
“Talent and hard work are essential, but athletes also need people and institutions that believe in their potential and support them along the way,” he said.
“Urmi Group has always tried to remain connected with sports and stand beside athletes in their journey. Our participation in the BGMEA Cup is another reflection of that commitment.
The BGMEA Cup 2026 is scheduled to begin on 20 October with 16 participating teams. In the group stage, Team Urmi Group will face Musharaf Apparels, Bando Design and Fabrica Knit Composite Limited.
