Dengue claims 249 lives this year

Dengue claimed four more lives in the country in the 24 hours till Thursday morning, while 1,978 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, taking the total number of dengue deaths this year to 249 with 81,598 hospitalisations.
The figures were reported by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday, the first day of October. The latest data showed that the dengue outbreak continued to put pressure on hospitals after September recorded the highest monthly death toll of the year.
The four new deaths came a day after six dengue patients died and 1,948 others were hospitalised in the 24 hours to Wednesday morning. The Wednesday figures had taken the cumulative death toll to 245 and total hospital admissions to 79,620.
The DGHS data showed that 148 people died of dengue in September alone, compared with 43 in August and 36 in July. September therefore accounted for the largest share of dengue deaths recorded in any month this year.
The number of dengue infections also rose sharply during the monsoon months. According to DGHS data, 2,907 patients were hospitalised in June and 9,206 in July. The number climbed to 20,536 in August before reaching 79,620 cumulatively by the end of September.
At the end of September, 73,890 dengue patients had recovered and been discharged from hospitals, while 5,485 patients were receiving treatment nationwide. The official DGHS dashboard recorded 79,620 hospital admissions and 245 deaths from January through September.
The outbreak had started the year at a comparatively lower level. DGHS figures cited by health authorities show 1,081 hospitalisations in January, 409 in February, 353 in March, 640 in April and 714 in May. Cases then increased considerably from June.
The latest increase has raised concern over dengue transmission continuing through October. Reuters reported on Thursday that recent rainfall and changing weather conditions could help sustain transmission during the month. Medical entomologist Kabirul Bashar of Jahangirnagar University said September’s rainfall could continue contributing to infections because of a reported 45-to-60-day lag between rainfall and increased dengue transmission.
The DGHS dashboard also showed that of the 79,620 patients recorded through September 30, 49,427 were male and 29,949 female. Among the 245 deaths, 115 were male and 126 female.
With four additional deaths and nearly 2,000 new hospital admissions on the first day of October, the dengue situation remains a major public health concern as the country enters another month of the ongoing outbreak.
