Uzbekistan seeks to expand partnership with Bangladesh

Uzbekistan has expressed its readiness to expand cooperation with Bangladesh in several areas, including sustainable development, climate change and regional collaboration.

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev received Dr Khalilur Rahman, President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Minister, on Tuesday, according to the Uzbek President’s Office.

The two sides reaffirmed their shared interest in strengthening constructive cooperation towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, advancing regional cooperation in Central Asia, addressing the effects of climate change, and promoting a culture of peace and interfaith dialogue.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mirziyoyev congratulated Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

He noted that Uzbekistan was the first country Rahman had visited in that capacity.
Rahman conveyed greetings from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the Uzbek president.

The discussions also focused on expanding and strengthening cooperation with the United Nations and its agencies.

In recent years, the UN General Assembly has adopted 15 resolutions initiated by Uzbekistan, including two approved this year, according to the Uzbek President’s Office.

Uzbekistan actively participates in the work of the UN’s principal organs and bodies. The country has also announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2035-2036 term.

Khalilur Rahman arrived in Uzbekistan to attend the World Summit on “Investing in Children’s Well-being: Towards Sustainable and Equitable Development for Future Generations”, scheduled for October 21-22 in Samarkand.

The meeting highlighted shared interests in international cooperation and sustainable development as Bangladesh and Uzbekistan explored ways to strengthen their partnership.
