Speaker stresses fish farming to meet protein demand

A total of 250 kilograms of fish fingerlings were released into the Parliament Bhaban Lake on Monday as part of an ongoing nationwide initiative to increase fish production and meet the protein needs of the people.

Speaking at the fish-release programme, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, MP, said fish farming in the country’s open and closed water bodies was an important initiative to meet people’s protein requirements.

He said Bangladesh’s coastal areas and the Bay of Bengal were particularly important for fish production and harvesting.

The Speaker made the remarks as the chief guest while releasing fish fingerlings into the lake at the Parliament complex.

He said people in rural areas were being encouraged through fish farming in the Parliament Bhaban Lake. Such initiatives would encourage people across the country to become more interested in producing fishery resources, he added.

Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md Golam Sorwar Bhuiyan delivered the welcome address at the event, while Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, MP, chaired the programme.

Moni said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had been working day and night and had taken special initiatives to increase fish and meat production to meet the protein needs of the people.

Fish production must be increased in every corner of the country to make the aspirations of “Amader Santan Thakuk Dudhey-Vatey” and “Mache-Vatey Bengalis” a reality, he said.

Under the initiative, a total of 1,200 kilograms of fish fingerlings will be released into the Parliament Bhaban Lake in stages.

On Thursday, 250 kilograms of fingerlings of rohu, mrigal, catla and kalibaus varieties were released into the lake.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the National Parliament Secretariat were present at the programme.
