Shah Ali thana OC withdrawn

Jahangir Alam, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Shah Ali police station, was withdrawn over the attack, looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre, a low-cost healthcare facility in the city’s Mirpur area.

The move was confirmed in a notice signed by DMP Headquarters Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed.

Police have so far arrested nine people in connection with the incident, DMP confirmed via text message on Sunday morning.

Police also said two truckloads of goods which were looted from the health centre during the attack and vandalism had been recovered.

Regarding the vandalism at the Radda health complex, the home minister said: “We have learnt that there was negligence of duty on the part of the police. Action has been taken against those responsible.

Whoever is behind this incident BNP or any other identity a proper investigation will be carried out and strict action taken accordingly.

Nine people have already been arrested. Transferring police officers is not the final solution; further action is being taken, including institutional measures.

Four people were arrested in an initial round on Saturday, with the then OC of Shah Ali thana, Jahangir Alam, confirming at the time that they had been arrested from various locations across the capital.

The attack and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre, located in Mirpur-1, took place late on Thursday night.

The following day, the centre’s executive director, Nasrin Akhter, filed a case with Shah Ali police station, naming one accused, Hanif Mia, along with roughly 250 unidentified others.

Clinic authorities alleged that at least two hundred masked individuals held security guards hostage and entered the facility, then looted medical equipments, medicine, government vaccines, cash and other important items.

According to the authorities, heavy machinery was used after the looting to demolish one brick-built building and three semi-pucca structures at the centre.

The clinic authorities claim the attack, looting and vandalism caused around 15 million taka (roughly BDT 1.5 crore) in damage.

The authorities have further alleged that after the attack, a signboard reading “Somomona Doakandar Samabay Samity Limited” (a like-minded shopkeepers’ cooperative society) was put up on the site, and that although police were present at the scene during the attack, no immediate action was taken.

Allegations have also surfaced that BNP leader and reserved-seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti was behind the incident, though no comment from her has been obtained regarding the allegation.

Following the incident, the presence of law enforcement in the area around the Radda centre has been increased, and the police’s arrest operation in connection with the case remains ongoing.
