‘Awami League’s flash processions will be dealt with firmly’

Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie has said attempts by the banned Awami League to create unrest through flash processions will be dealt with politically and administratively.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a special meeting on the law-and-order situation in Chattogram on Wednesday.

Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie said the Awami League is a banned political party and is trying to create unrest in society by holding flash processions in different places.

“Under no circumstances should such unrest lead to anarchy, lawlessness or terrorism. On the one hand, we will deal with it politically. On the other hand, those responsible for maintaining law and order in the district will remain vigilant and alert. They will take action as necessary,” he said.

Regarding the meeting on the law-and-order situation in Chattogram, the minister said it was very important.

He said decisions had been taken after detailed discussions with the administration and elected representatives at the district law-and-order coordination committee meeting to address issues including theft, robbery, illegal weapons and drugs.

“Necessary steps are being taken to improve the law-and-order situation so that ordinary people can live and move around normally. We are dealing with these situations very firmly. We have taken and will continue to take steps with emphasis on ensuring that common people can lead a normal life,” he said.

He said issues such as hill cutting and illegal sand extraction, in addition to illegal weapons and drugs, were also linked to the law-and-order situation.

“Stricter steps are being taken in these matters as well,” he added.
Highlighting the importance of Chattogram, Annie said the district was a traditional business and economic hub.

“Chattogram is one of the most important business cities and economic zones in Bangladesh. We will take all the steps required by the government, considering all aspects, so that people can live normally in this city and district,” he said.

Referring to the recent enactment of new laws and amendments to existing laws, the Water Resources Minister said, “You have seen very recently, and you have also seen in Parliament, that new laws have been enacted and existing laws amended on many issues.”

“I will not say that the trends of the past 17 years can be completely reversed in 17 days or 17 months, if you wish. However, we have taken major initiatives.

We have taken steps to improve the law-and-order situation across the country, and particularly in Chattogram district and Chattogram city, by dealing with all situations with great responsibility under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman,” he said.
