BD, Algeria seek broader cooperation to deepen bilateral ties

Bangladesh and Algeria are keen to further strengthen their longstanding bilateral relations by expanding cooperation in energy, trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and other areas of mutual interest.

The issue was discussed separately at meetings between Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

During the meetings, the Bangladesh side reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between the two countries and stressed the need to translate the relationship into greater practical cooperation.

Energy security emerged as a key area of discussion. The state ministers urged the Algerian ambassador to explore enhanced cooperation in the energy sector to support Bangladesh’s long-term energy security.

The two sides also discussed expanding cooperation in trade and investment, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and shipbuilding. Cooperation in fertiliser was highlighted as an important area, with Bangladesh stressing its relevance to ensuring food security.

The discussions also covered broader people-to-people exchanges and the importance of high-level visits in giving fresh momentum to bilateral relations.

At her meeting with the Algerian envoy, Shama Obaed Islam also highlighted several additional areas for cooperation, including climate change, sports and culture.

She noted that both Bangladesh and Algeria are affected by the adverse impacts of global warming and emphasised the importance of greater collaboration on climate-related issues.

The State Minister also encouraged Algeria to increase imports of biodegradable and environmentally friendly jute and jute goods from Bangladesh, pointing to the potential for expanding bilateral trade through Bangladesh’s traditional jute sector.

She further stressed the need to deepen cooperation in sports and culture as part of efforts to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries.

The Algerian ambassador expressed his country’s interest in expanding cooperation with Bangladesh in energy, pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding, sports and culture.

He also supported greater high-level exchanges between the two countries as part of efforts to deepen existing bilateral relations.

The separate meetings underline a shared interest in broadening Bangladesh-Algeria relations beyond traditional diplomatic ties towards greater economic, commercial and people-to-people cooperation.
