Ex-JCD leader Lenin remanded
A Dhaka court has placed former Shah Ali thana Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) convener Abul Kalam Azad, alias ‘Shooter Lenin’, on a two-day remand in a case filed over an attack, vandalism and looting at Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1 in the capital.
After a hearing on Tuesday (October 20), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashraful Haque granted the two-day remand.
Sub-Inspector Lutfor Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution department confirmed the development. He said Lenin was produced before the court on Monday, when police sought a seven-day remand for interrogation.
According to the case statement, a group of people entered the Radda MCH-FP Centre at around 12:05am on September 25, carrying hammers, sticks and locally made weapons.
The attackers allegedly climbed over the boundary wall, assaulted two night guards on duty—Andria Sarkar, 43, and Md Abdul Hai, 63—and tied them up before confining them.
They then allegedly broke the main gate with hammers and brought an excavator into the premises. Using the machine, they demolished a semi-pucca structure measuring approximately 28 feet by 15 feet on the eastern side of the facility, causing an estimated Tk3 lakh in damage, according to the complaint.
The complaint further stated that another semi-pucca building used to provide family planning services, along with its furniture, was vandalised, causing an estimated Tk4 lakh in damage.
A separate semi-pucca building measuring around 60 feet by 17 feet, used by the clinic in-charge, doctors and deputy clinic in-charge, was also vandalised along with its furniture and equipment. The damage was estimated at Tk20 lakh.
