DSCC administrator inspects waterlogged areas

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) intensified drainage and cleaning operations on Sunday after heavy rain caused temporary waterlogging in several low-lying and sloping areas of the capital.

DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam inspected several affected areas, including Doel Chattar, Dhaka Medical College, Palashi intersection and New Market, at noon to assess the situation and oversee efforts to ease the waterlogging.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder began around 4am, causing temporary waterlogging in some low-lying areas and sloping roads under the DSCC jurisdiction.

DSCC cleaners and emergency response teams were deployed from the early morning to reduce public suffering, according to the city corporation.

Workers continued clearing drain openings, removing accumulated waste and pumping out stagnant water.

A footpath clearance drive was also under way to ensure normal movement of pedestrians.

During his field inspection, Abdus Salam expressed dissatisfaction after finding some laxity in cleaning operations.

He said workers had been instructed to begin full-scale operations from Fajr, but the directive had not been implemented completely.

“Normal cleaning activities were disrupted by the rain throughout the night, but after the rain subsided, there was some negligence in the pace at which workers were expected to resume their duties,” he said.
