NISCHA demands tougher action to prevent road accidents
Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA) has called for strict enforcement of traffic laws, improved driver skills, repairs to hazardous roads and accountability of relevant authorities to reduce deaths and disabilities caused by road accidents.
The call was made at a rally and a brief meeting in the capital on Thursday, marking National Road Safety Day 2026.
Organised by NISCHA, the rally began at 11:00am from the organisation’s central office in Kakrail and ended at the National Press Club.
NISCHA advisers, life members, central committee leaders, road safety experts and representatives of its district and upazila branches took part in the programme. Representatives of Shobar Jonno Bangladesh and Bangladesh Cycle Lane also joined, along with members of NISCHA’s branches in Munshiganj, Dhaka, Dhamrai, Palash, Narayanganj, Louhajang, Shibpur, Savar and Thakurgaon.
Participants called for greater discipline on roads, compliance with traffic laws, protection for drivers and passengers, and increased public awareness to prevent accidents. Banners, festoons and placards carried messages demanding safer roads.
Speaking at the meeting at the National Press Club, NISCHA leaders said road accidents were not inevitable and that their risks could be reduced through planned initiatives, effective enforcement of existing laws and rules, skilled drivers and responsible behaviour by road users.
They said road safety should be treated not as an isolated programme but as a regular and coordinated national priority.
The organisation called for regular and impartial action against traffic violations, dangerous speeding, wrong-way driving, risky overtaking, carrying excess passengers or goods, and irregularities involving vehicle documents and fitness certificates.
NISCHA leaders also recommended improving driver training, testing standards and the licensing process to ensure drivers had the necessary skills and competence.
They stressed the importance of drivers’ physical fitness, adequate rest and reasonable working hours, saying the relevant authorities must take effective measures to reduce accidents caused by fatigue and a lack of driving skills. The organisation also called for regular fitness checks for passenger and goods vehicles and continuous monitoring to prevent defective and unfit vehicles from operating on roads.
The theme of this year’s National Road Safety Day is “Safe Roads, Prosperous Country, Bangladesh First”.
On the occasion, NISCHA urged people from all walks of life to obey traffic laws, maintain safe driving speeds, avoid risky behaviour and respect the rights and safety of other road users.
