KU student beaten over theft allegation dies in hospital

A university student died in hospital after being beaten and injured on Islamnagar road adjacent to the Hall Road area of Khulna University (KU).

The deceased, Md Azmal Hossain (22), was a first-year English Department student at Northwestern University in the city. His home was in Darshana, Chuadanga.

At around midnight on Friday, he was beaten and had his hair forcibly cut on the roof of a four-storey building on that road, over allegations of theft. He was later taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in a KU ambulance, where the attending physician pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.

According to hospital sources, several young men brought the critically injured Azmal to Khulna Medical College (KUMEC) Hospital at around 1:30am on Friday night. When bringing him in, they told hospital authorities that Azmal had been injured after jumping from the fourth floor of a building in the Khulna University area.

The deceased student’s father, Kutubuddin, alleged: “They called me at night and said something had happened here, [asking for] money. Then they asked for Tk 1 lakh over the phone as compensation. I said fine, keep him under your care.

I then called repeatedly, but no one picked up, and later the phone was switched off. I took a train and reached Khulna in the morning, arriving after 6am. When I got there, some people told me, ‘Uncle, they beat your son to death.’ But the students said your son jumped from the roof. Those at the mess said, ‘Uncle, your son is at the 250-bed hospital.'”

He continued: “Then I saw that they had beaten him excessively and killed him. I have left this to Allah for justice – I don’t want to go through courts, He will judge. I have no complaint; I don’t want my son’s body cut up [for an autopsy].”

According to hospital sources, Azmal had injury marks on various parts of his body, and his hair had been cut on one side of his head. After his death, the young men who had brought him to the hospital quickly left the scene.

On the matter, Professor Dr Md Salauddin, the university’s director of student affairs, said the incident occurred outside the university, over which the university has no jurisdiction in such cases. However, he said the university had spoken with the police administration and was assisting them in this regard.

Iqbal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Harintana Police Station, said they had learned of the incident. The body is at the morgue of Khulna Medical College Hospital. Legal action will be taken if the family files a complaint at the police station.
