DSCC orders crackdown on mosquito breeding

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam has ordered officials to intensify and coordinate mosquito-control activities, stressing the destruction of breeding grounds alongside larviciding, fogging and cleanliness drives.

The directive came at a review meeting on strengthening mosquito-control activities at Nagar Bhaban auditorium on Monday.

The meeting discussed identifying and destroying mosquito breeding grounds across the city, closer monitoring of field-level operations and stronger coordination among different DSCC departments.

Abdus Salam said spraying insecticides alone would not be enough to control mosquitoes.

“Mosquito control is not possible simply by spraying insecticides. It requires destroying mosquito breeding grounds, conducting regular cleanliness drives and ensuring the direct involvement of citizens.

A recent survey conducted by DSCC found mosquito larvae in nearly 60 per cent of households, which is concerning. Therefore, citizens must be encouraged to voluntarily participate in these efforts through greater awareness,” he said.

He urged residents to remove stagnant water from courtyards, rooftops, flower pots and discarded containers soon after rainfall.

“Alongside the city corporation, city residents must also play a responsible role in building a mosquito-free and healthy city,” he said.

On the same day, the DSCC administrator laid the foundation stone for Mazed Sardar Biponi Bitan in Ward 33 at an estimated cost of Tk3,474.33 lakh.

Dhaka-7 MP Hamidur Rahman attended the event as the chief guest.

The seven-storey modern shopping complex will have a total floor area of 45,475 square feet and accommodate 235 shops.

The DSCC’s Market Construction Cell is implementing the project, with completion targeted for June 2028.
