Tuku calls for joint fight against drugs, crime

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku MP has called for coordinated efforts by the administration, law enforcement agencies, public representatives and civil society to strengthen law and order, curb drug abuse and build a healthy society.

He made the call at a special meeting and exchange-of-views session of the Dhaka District Law and Order Committee at the conference room of the Dhaka deputy commissioner on Monday.

Tuku, who has also been assigned to oversee law and order and other development activities in Dhaka district, described drug abuse as a major social crisis and warned that criminal activity was increasing alongside the spread of narcotics.

He called for strict enforcement measures alongside a strong social movement and greater public awareness to contain drug abuse.

The state minister also urged all stakeholders to take an active role in preventing the spread of juvenile gangs.

He alleged that juvenile gangs had proliferated under the previous government, leaving long-term adverse effects on society.

Families, educational institutions, local administrations and communities must work together to keep young people away from crime, he said.

Addressing public officials, Tuku said their primary responsibility was to ensure public welfare and good governance.

He said public trust in the government would increase if officials performed their duties with honesty, efficiency and dedication while upholding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s “Bangladesh First” philosophy.

The state minister stressed that maintaining law and order required cooperation among government agencies and wider society rather than relying solely on law enforcement.

Tuku also urged authorities to give environmental conservation equal importance alongside development activities.

He called for effective measures to prevent river pollution, manage industrial waste and maintain the urban ecological balance to build a liveable Bangladesh for future generations.

Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam chaired the meeting.

Additional superintendents of police, additional deputy commissioners, representatives of law enforcement agencies, Local Government Division officials, public representatives and members of the district law and order committee attended the meeting.
