Girls deserve to feel safe
Recent disturbing incidents involving young girls have increased fear among parents and created a sense of insecurity in society.
Therefore, many parents now worry about allowing their daughters to go outside alone because of inappropriate behaviour towards girls and children.
Parents should take reasonable precautions and, when necessary, have younger girls accompanied by a parent, elder brother or another trusted family member.
However, responsibility does not rest with parents alone. Boys and men must also learn to respect girls and treat them properly.
I urge parents, schools, communities and the authorities to work together to ensure girls’ safety.
Boys should be taught good manners, respect and appropriate behaviour from an early age, while authorities must take strict action against those who harm or harass others.
Every girl deserves to feel safe while going to school, visiting a shop or simply stepping outside. We must work together to create a safer society for our daughters and sisters. No child should have to live in fear.
