Gazette on boundaries of 11 parliamentary seats
The Election Commission (EC) has published a new gazette regarding the boundaries of 11 parliamentary constituencies in the country. Newly formed Upazilas and Union Parishads have been incorporated into these constituencies. Officials concerned stated that while the constituency boundaries have been revised on paper, there will be no actual change in reality. The EC published the gazette on Sunday (August 30).
The constituencies are: Thakurgaon-1, Bogura-2, Pirojpur-1, Mymensingh-10, Brahmanbaria-3 and 4, Cumilla-3, Lakshmipur-2 and 3, Chattogram-2, and Cox’s Bazar-1.
According to the Election Commission’s gazette, the seat vacated by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is Thakurgaon-1. The Ruhia and Bhulli upazilas have been included in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, which comprises the Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila; these two upazilas were formed by bifurcating the Sadar Upazila. Approval for these two upazilas was granted during a meeting of the
National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization (NICAR) last May.
In addition to Shibganj, the Mokamtala Upazila has been included in the Bogura-2 constituency. Mokamtala Upazila received approval at the NICAR meeting held last May.
The newly formed South Gafargaon Upazila has been added to the Mymensingh-10 constituency alongside Gafargaon Upazila. This Upazila received approval during a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization-Reform (NICAR) last July.
Barishal Union Parishad of Akhaura Upazila has been included in the Brahmanbaria-3 constituency. The Brahmanbaria-4 constituency has been constituted excluding this Union Parishad. The new Barishal Union was approved last May by separating six villages from Basudeb Union of Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila and incorporating them into Akhaura Upazila.
Bangra Upazila has been added to the Muradnagar Upazila within the Comilla-3 constituency. Bangra Upazila received approval during a meeting of NIKAR last July.
The newly formed Fatikchhari North Upazila has been added to Fatikchhari Upazila in the Chittagong-2 constituency. The newly formed Matarmuhuri Upazila has been included in the Cox’s Bazar-1 constituency.
