‘Extortionist cops to be listed, punished’
A nationwide list of extortionists is being prepared alongside a separate list of police personnel allegedly involved with them, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Saturday, warning that no one involved in extortion or related criminal activities will be spared.
The minister said instructions have been issued to take swift action against criminals, extortionists and drug dealers in Dhaka and other metropolitan areas.
He made the remarks while visiting Professor Dr Md Asadur Rahman, head of the ENT Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, who was attacked after allegedly refusing to pay extortion money.
“We want to eliminate criminals. Instructions have been given to swiftly take action against those involved in extortion and drug trafficking in the DMP and metropolitan areas,” Salahuddin said.
He also warned that action would be taken against law enforcement officials who fail to perform their duties or do not take action against extortionists.
The minister said police activities to improve the law-and-order situation would be intensified further.
Speaking about the nationwide drive against extortion, he said the government was compiling a list of extortionists and would also identify police personnel found to have links with them.
“If any police member is found to be involved with extortionists, their name will also be included in the list and action will be taken,” he said, adding that no one involved would be spared.
Professor Dr Md Asadur Rahman was attacked by a group of miscreants at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Monday, August 17. He is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital in serious condition.
