No legal bar to presidential poll

Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal on Wednesday said there is no legal impediment to holding the presidential election as scheduled on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters at the Attorney General’s Office, he said the election would be held smoothly and there was no legal obstacle to proceeding with it.

His remarks came after the High Court summarily dismissed a writ petition challenging the validity of Article 70 of the Constitution and seeking suspension of the presidential election schedule.

The petitioner’s lawyer has since filed an appeal with the Appellate Division against the High Court decision.

The High Court rejected the writ petition on August 18, leaving the presidential election schedule unchanged.
