Dengue admissions hit yearly high

Five more people have died of dengue and 1,872 patients have been hospitalised across Bangladesh in the 24 hours to Tuesday, pushing the country’s dengue death toll to 195 and setting a new yearly high for daily hospital admissions, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest figures bring the total number of dengue patients hospitalised since January 1 to 65,499.
September has emerged as the deadliest month of the year, with 98 dengue-related deaths recorded in the first 21 days, according to DGHS data.

The figure is more than double the 43 deaths recorded throughout August and well above the 36 deaths reported in July.

Dengue hospitalisations have also surged sharply this month. A total of 22,554 patients were hospitalised during the first 17 days of September, already surpassing the 22,536 recorded throughout August. The figure has risen further with the latest admissions.

Before September, monthly hospitalisations stood at 1,081 in January, 409 in February, 353 in March, 640 in April, 714 in May, 2,907 in June, 9,206 in July and 22,536 in August, according to DGHS data.

Of the 1,872 patients admitted in the latest 24-hour period, Dhaka division recorded the highest number at 391, followed by Khulna with 316 and Chattogram with 285.

Dhaka South City Corporation reported 191 admissions, while Dhaka North City Corporation recorded 159. Barishal reported 190 admissions, Rajshahi 162, Mymensingh 105, Rangpur 67 and Sylhet six.
The figures account for all 1,872 new admissions reported during the period.

Dhaka division has recorded the highest number of dengue cases this year, followed by Khulna, Chattogram and Barishal, according to the latest DGHS figures. Both Dhaka city corporations have also reported a significant number of cases.

The increase in deaths has been particularly pronounced this month. By September 17, DGHS data showed that 79 people had died of dengue in September, while September 8 had recorded the highest single-day death toll of nine at that point.

The latest figures show that September has continued to see a sharp acceleration in both dengue deaths and hospitalisations, with the month already recording the highest death toll of the year.
