Lawyers rally against AG, demand demission
A group of lawyers on Sunday demanded the resignation of Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal, alleging irregularities and “appointment trading” in the recruitment of Deputy Attorneys General (DAGs) and Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) at the Attorney General’s Office.
The lawyers staged a protest in front of the Supreme Court Annex Building on Sunday afternoon, accusing the authorities of failing to properly assess dedicated leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum in appointments.
Organised under the banner of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, the lawyers brought out a procession and marched around the Supreme Court premises. They declared the Attorney General “unwanted” and chanted: “One point, one demand — resignation of the Attorney General.” The protesters called for an investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the appointment of DAGs and AAGs, particularly allegations of “appointment trading”.
Speaking at the rally, lawyer Sharif U Ahmed called for the immediate resignation of Ruhul Quddus Kajal.
“We want the resignation of Attorney General Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal. During the One-Eleven period, he said he was not involved in BNP politics. But now he is supporting the fascists and attempting to reorganise them,” he said.
Sharif also alleged that Kajal no longer had the qualifications required to continue as Attorney General.
“Ruhul Quddus Kajal has lost all qualifications to remain in the position of Attorney General,” he said, alleging that corruption involving hundreds of crores of taka had occurred in appointments at the Attorney General’s Office.
He demanded an investigation into the alleged corruption and appointment irregularities.
“From today’s rally, we declare Ruhul Quddus Kajal unwanted at the Attorney General’s Office. Our movement will continue until his resignation,” Sharif U Ahmed said.
The protesting lawyers said they wanted an Attorney General’s Office free from what they described as “fascist, hidden and corrupt elements”.
They also announced that their protest would continue until their demands, including an investigation into the alleged appointment irregularities and proper recognition of dedicated forum leaders and activists, were addressed.
