‘Victims will receive allowances for past 18 years
Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, the Minister for Liberation War Affairs, has announced that those who suffered persecution, enforced disappearances, and killings during the tenure of the previous government will be accorded the status of heroes.
He declared that a special directorate is being established by the ministry to bring those who fell victim to such atrocities during the movements and struggles of the past 18 years under a system of official recognition and allowances.
The Minister made these remarks on Monday (August 10) while attending, as the chief guest, a screening of a documentary titled “Persecution of Lawyers During the Fascist Regime,” organized by the Dhaka Bar Association. He stated that through that directorate, those who suffered persecution over the past 18 years would be officially gazetted and accorded the status of heroes by the state.
At the event, the Minister further mentioned that, under the current interim government, the process of issuing the gazette for the ‘July Fighters’ has been initiated and the ‘July Directorate’ has been established. Urging the concerned individuals to apply promptly, he stated that everyone who played a role in this struggle would be duly recognized and included in the gazette.
The event was presided over by Dhaka Bar President Advocate Md. Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan and supervised by General Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Khan; prominent lawyers, including leaders from various levels of the Dhaka Bar and the Metropolitan Public Prosecutor, were present.
