A 350-year-old heritage landmark of Kaliganj

Tucked away in Nagari of Gazipur’s Kaliganj, a nearly 350-year-old church continues to tell stories of faith, colonial-era encounters, architecture and the evolution of Bengali-language learning.

St Nicholas Church, also known as St Nicholas of Tolentino Church, was established in 1663 and is regarded as one of the oldest Christian places of worship in Bangladesh. Beyond its religious significance, the historic church is considered an important part of Kaliganj’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Historical accounts suggest that the Portuguese played a key role in establishing the church. Although Portuguese traders initially came to the subcontinent for commercial purposes, they later became involved in spreading Christianity in the region through missionary activities.

The church was built with the assistance of local people and financial support from Portuguese traders, according to historical accounts. It was named after St Nicholas of Tolentino, while locals commonly refer to it as Nagari Church because of its location.

The church also has a notable connection with the history of the Bengali language. Historical records suggest that an early translation of the Bible into the regional Bengali language was produced here.

There is also evidence linking the area to the publication of an early bilingual Bengali dictionary and other early printed materials.

The history of the church is closely linked to the arrival and activities of European missionaries in the subcontinent. Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama reached India by sea in 1498, opening a new maritime route between Europe and the Indian subcontinent. Subsequently, European traders and missionaries began arriving in the region, contributing to the spread of Christianity.

According to historical accounts, the Portuguese established the church in Nagari in 1663 with permission from Mughal Emperor Jahangir. The church and the nearby shrine of St Anthony are now regarded as important religious and heritage sites in the area.

The church’s distinctive architecture and centuries-old history have also made Nagari an attraction for visitors. Tourists and history enthusiasts from different parts of the country visit the area to see the historic church and experience its tranquil surroundings.

Father Khokon Vincent Gomes, parish priest of St Nicholas Church, said Mass is held at the church every Saturday and Sunday.

“Prayers are offered during Mass for peace in the country,” he said.

He said the central message of Christianity is love and that Jesus came into the world as the Prince of Peace and to free humanity from sin.

The church also observes Christmas on December 25 with religious solemnity and holds various programmes on other important Christian occasions, including Star Sunday.

With its centuries-old history, religious significance and links to the development of Bengali-language learning, St Nicholas Church remains a unique heritage landmark of Kaliganj and a reminder of the region’s diverse cultural past.
