Sugarcane cultivation booms in Kalkini

Farmers in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur are optimistic about higher earnings following a bumper sugarcane harvest this year, with the crop cultivated on 115 hectares of land.

Low production costs, strong market demand and attractive profit margins have encouraged more farmers to take up sugarcane cultivation.

Farmers say they can earn up to four times their investment per bigha, making it an increasingly profitable agricultural venture.

The fields of Ramchandrapur and Khuner Char villages, situated along the Arial Khan River, are now covered with lush green sugarcane plantations.

Four popular varieties White Bombay, Kajli Gendari, Rong Bilash and Bansh Gendari are mainly cultivated in the area. Their juicy texture and sweet taste have made them highly popular in local markets.

Farmers Zamin Mia and Jamal Sardar said sugarcane cultivation requires comparatively low investment while offering substantial returns.

“Production costs range between Tk 30,000 and Tk 40,000 per bigha, but the profit can be up to four times the investment,” they said, adding that strong market demand for the popular varieties has made the crop increasingly attractive.

They also said sugarcane cultivation had helped many farmers overcome financial difficulties. According to them, their success has largely come through their own hard work and determination, as they have not received the expected assistance or agricultural advice from the Upazila Agriculture Office.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Sudip Biswas told The New Nation government allocations and incentives for sugarcane cultivation were limited, making it difficult to bring all farmers under the existing support programmes.
