3 arrested over wheat theft allegation in Khulna Workers block highway

Workers have blocked the Khulna-Jashore Highway in protest against the arrest of three people, including Md Arif Hossain, president of the Maheshwarpasha Maniktala Food Warehouse Workers’ Union, under Daulatpur Police Station in Khulna city.

The blockade began at around 9:30am on Tuesday and continued until 11am, causing traffic congestion on both sides of the highway.

The blockade was temporarily called off following mediation by Sheikh Imam Hossain, general secretary of the Daulatpur thana unit of the BNP. However, the workers warned that they would resume the blockade if their union president was not released.

Meanwhile, all loading and unloading operations at the Maniktala Food Warehouse remained suspended since the morning in protest against the union president’s arrest.

According to police and local sources, two truckloads of wheat were allegedly being taken out of the silo inside the food warehouse without any invoice on Monday night. Silo authorities intercepted the trucks while they were leaving the premises.
