Train derails in Gafargaon, resumes after 8 hours

Four coaches of a Dhaka-bound Jamalpur commuter train derailed at Shibganj rail crossing while entering Gafargaon Railway Station on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route around 9am on Friday, disrupting train services for eight hours.

The train shook with a loud noise before entering Gafargaon station around 9am. At that time, the four coaches behind the engine derailed. The sudden incident caused panic among passengers, but no casualties were reported.

The accident also disrupted traffic on the Gafargaon-Bhaluka road near Gafargaon-Shibganj, temporarily halting vehicular movement. As a result, passengers and commuters using both routes suffered considerable hardship. Hanif Ali, station master of Gafargaon Railway Station, said the railway rescue team began work immediately after receiving the news. By 4pm, all four derailed coaches had been recovered with the help of a relief train.

After the railway line was repaired, train services resumed at 4:55pm, he said.
The eight-hour disruption caused major delays to intercity and commuter trains on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route. Railway authorities advised passengers to use alternative road routes.

A railway investigation team visited the scene to determine the exact cause of the derailment.
