July Charter to guide constitutional reforms

Law Minister Advocate Md Asaduzzaman on Friday said the government would make the constitutional amendments necessary to advance the reform process in line with the July Charter.

He said the interim government had accepted 133 proposals from the Law Reform Commission and promulgated them through ordinances.

“Our government has accepted almost all of them. A Constitution Amendment Committee has been formed to take forward the remaining ordinances in line with the July Charter,” he said.

The minister was speaking to reporters after inaugurating a tree fair at the old Deputy Commissioner’s Court premises in Jhenaidah town at around 11:00am.

Responding to demands from the National Citizen Party and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for a referendum and implementation of the July Charter, Asaduzzaman said the issue could be discussed in parliament.
“They are in parliament. If the matter is raised there, it will be discussed,” he said.
Asked about recent attacks on NCP leaders and activists in Sylhet and Habiganj, the minister said legal action had already been taken.
“A case has been filed. Following an investigation, those responsible will be tried in accordance with the law,” he said.
State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat, who also attended the event, said the government had adopted a master plan to attract domestic and foreign tourists.
He said potential tourist destinations in Jhenaidah had been included in the government’s tourism development plan.
Political Assistant to the Prime Minister Md Rashed Khan, Deputy Commissioner Md Noman Hossain, District Council Administrator MA Majid, and officials of the district administration and police were also present.
