1.4 lakh arrested since May

Bangladesh Police have arrested 39,267 people in a nationwide special operation carried out between May 1 and July 27, while the total number of arrests, including other cases and operations, reached 141,989, according to Police Headquarters.

A statement issued by Police Headquarters on Tuesday said the nationwide anti-crime drive also led to the arrest of 102,722 people in various cases and other operations during the same period.

Combined with those detained in the special campaign, the total number of arrests stood at 141,989.
The operation resulted in the recovery of 325 firearms, 2,802 rounds of bullets and cartridges, 103 magazines, 46 cocktails, 2.25 kilograms of gunpowder, 638 locally made weapons, 18 firearm components, 17 pieces of weapon- and bomb-making equipment, and 10,300 chocolate firecrackers.

Among the recovered firearms were 101 pistols, 35 shooter guns, 38 LGs, 19 revolvers, 92 guns, 15 pipe guns, seven shotguns, three rifles, two submachine guns, 12 air guns and one pen gun.

Police also seized a large quantity of narcotics during the operations, including 9,122,996 yaba tablets, 9,080 packets of heroin, 4,095 bottles of phensedyl, 8,211 bottles of foreign liquor, 423 bottles of locally made liquor, 8,552 packets of cannabis, and other illegal drugs.

According to Police Headquarters, 17,066 cases were filed in connection with the narcotics recovered during the operations.

A total of 24,821 people were arrested in those drug-related cases.

The nationwide special operation forms part of Bangladesh Police’s ongoing efforts to curb crime, recover illegal arms and narcotics, and strengthen law enforcement across the country.
