Jelly-filled shrimp seized in Feni

A mobile court in Feni Sadar on Thursday seized 105kg of jelly-filled shrimp during a drive against the sale of adulterated fish and fined three fish traders a total of Tk 90,000.

The drive was conducted at fish stalls in Feni municipality at around 6:00am by the Feni Sadar Upazila Administration and the Office of the Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer under the Fisheries and Fisheries Products (Inspection and Quality Control) Act, 2020.

During the drive, 56kg of jelly-filled shrimp was seized from Belal Fishing, while 24kg and 25kg were seized from Allah Dan Fishing and Erfan Fishing respectively.

As the sale of jelly-filled shrimp is an offence under Section 31 of the Fisheries and Fishery Products (Inspection and Quality Control) Act, 2020, the seized shrimp was destroyed and buried.

The owners of the three fish stalls were fined Tk 50,000, Tk 20,000 and Tk 20,000 respectively.

During the drive, traders and buyers at other fish stalls were also warned about the health risks of consuming jelly-filled shrimp. They were also informed about how the practice is used to increase the weight of shrimp and deceive buyers by altering their grade.

The mobile court was conducted by Fahmida Akhter, Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate of Feni Sadar.

Md Mirajul Islam, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer (Additional Duty), Feni Sadar; Syed Mostafa Zaman, Upazila Fisheries Officer, Parashuram; representatives of the District Fisheries Department, law enforcement agencies, members of the fish stall association and local residents were present during the drive.
