Dhaka-Ctg, Dhaka-Mawa highways under AI camera surveillance

As part of the government’s ‘zero-tolerance’ policy against crime and drug smuggling, the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Mawa highways have been brought under the coverage of state-of-the-art AI-based cameras and CCTV systems.

On Monday (July 20), Highway Police Additional Inspector General (IGP) Faruk Ahmed informed the media that the Dhaka-Mawa highway has also been brought under a similar surveillance system.

Faruk Ahmed stated that the entire Dhaka-Chittagong Highway has been brought under CCTV surveillance. Additionally, AI cameras have been installed at key locations along the Dhaka-Mawa Highway under a project of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges.

He stated that the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ministry is underway to formally hand over the responsibility of operating these AI cameras to the Highway Police. However, the Highway Police are already operating this surveillance system informally.

He stated that this advanced surveillance system would enhance the efficiency of highway police operations and play a crucial role in preventing highway-related crimes, such as robbery and drug trafficking.

The country’s remaining highways will also be brought under similar surveillance in phases to facilitate the rapid suppression of highway crime and address the long-standing problem of traffic congestion.

Faruk Ahmed stated that the two primary responsibilities of the Highway Police are curbing highway-related crimes—such as robbery and drug trafficking—and ensuring road safety by alleviating traffic congestion.
