The Sylhet court has announced the verdict in the case of gang rape of a housewife in Sylhet’s MC College hostel, which has been discussed nationwide. In the verdict, the court sentenced the accused Saifur Rahman to death, and Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Tarekul Islam and Arjun Laskar to life imprisonment.

Judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar of the Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal in the presence of all the accused announced the verdict on Tuesday in this sensational case after almost six years.

At around 11 am, all the accused in the rape case were produced before the court amidst tight security.

According to the information, the court finished reading the verdict in about two and a half hours. In the verdict, the accused Saifur Rahman was sentenced to death, and Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Tarekul Islam and Arjun Laskar were sentenced to life imprisonment.

In addition, the court acquitted Ainuddin alias Ainul, Misbaul Islam alias Rajan, Rabiul and Mahfuzur Rahman as the charges were not proven. All of them were involved in the Tilagarh-centric politics of the Chhatra League.

Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal Public Prosecutor (PP) Abul Hossain confirmed this information. He said, “We were able to prove the guilt of the accused in the court. The court judge sentenced one to death and three to life imprisonment in the gang rape case at MC College hostel. In addition, four people were acquitted.

Defendant’s lawyer Shah Mosahid Ali said, “No one gave any witness against the accused. The victim also did not identify the accused. Despite the fact that the crime was not proven, some people were punished. We will go to the High Court against this verdict.”

Court sources said, “After the case was transferred to the Women and Children Tribunal, the taking of testimony began in May last year. 24 witnesses testified in the case under discussion. Meanwhile, the rape victim, her husband, the magistrate who took the confessions of the accused, the investigation officer of the case, a professor of MC College and a doctor from the forensic department of Osmani Medical College testified in the court.”
