



An employee of Uttara EPZ was killed and her nephew-in-law was seriously injured after their motorcycle skidded on sand before she was run over by a bus in Nilphamari’s Jaldhaka upazila on Saturday morning.
Sumi Rani Roy, 35, wife of Shyamal Chandra Roy of Shaltitala area in West Shimulbari village under Jaldhaka upazila. She was employed at Uttara EPZ in Nilphamari Sadar upazila.
The injured, Swapan Roy, 30, son of Bipin Roy of Boragari area in Domar upazila, is the victim’s nephew-in-law.The accident occurred at around 6:00 am on Saturday near Chowdhuryhat Bazar in Shimulbari Union.
According to local residents, Sumi Rani Roy was travelling to her workplace at Uttara EPZ on a motorcycle ridden by Swapan Roy.
As they reached Chowdhuryhat Bazar, a Dhaka-bound overnight coach of Mayer Doa travelling towards Mirganj approached from the opposite direction at high speed. While attempting to avoid a collision, the motorcyclist applied the brakes, but the motorcycle skidded after hitting sand scattered across the road.
Swapan Roy fell onto the left side of the road and sustained serious injuries. Sumi Rani Roy was thrown onto the opposite side, where she came under the rear wheel of the bus, suffering fatal head injuries. She died on the spot.
Local people rescued the injured motorcyclist and took him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the area. Local residents alleged that loose sand left on the road had long increased the risk of accidents.
They demanded the immediate removal of the sand, stricter monitoring of hazardous road sections, and legal action against those responsible.
Police recovered the body after reaching the scene and completed the necessary legal formalities. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Zillur Rahman said appropriate legal action was being taken in connection with the incident
