‘EC begins preparations for local govt polls’

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said that the Election Commission has already begun necessary preparations to hold free, fair and impartial local government elections.

He made the remarks in response to a written question placed on the table of Parliament by ruling party member Sheikh Md. Rezaul Islam (Naogaon-6).

The minister said the EC is taking all necessary steps to organise an acceptable, participatory and credible local government election within the stipulated time.

In response to a question from opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami MP Abdul Karim (Gaibandha-2), Fakhrul also said that the government currently has no plan to increase the salaries and allowances of Union Parishad chairmen and members.
