The prime suspect in the high-profile murder of cable TV businessman Nasir was assaulted by an angry crowd after being brought to court in Narayanganj on Tuesday.
The suspect, Sharif, was attacked by protesters while police were escorting him to the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Saiful Islam for a remand hearing.
At one stage, members of the crowd managed to overpower police officers, drag the suspect away, and beat him before law enforcement regained control.
Demonstrators gathered on the court premises chanting slogans including, “Death penalty for the killer” and “Hang Sharif.”
As tensions escalated, additional police personnel were deployed, and the suspect was taken into the courtroom under heavy security.
The incident occurred around noon on Tuesday (June 30), when investigators sought a seven-day remand to question Sharif. After hearing both sides, the court granted a five-day remand.
Following the hearing, protesters again staged demonstrations demanding capital punishment for the accused. Police reinforced security and eventually brought the situation under control.
Confirming the remand order, Narayanganj Court Police Inspector Abdus Samad said Sharif had surrendered before the court on June 17 and had been held at Narayanganj District Jail since then. He was produced before the court on Tuesday for the remand hearing.
According to the case details, cable TV businessman Nasir was brutally murdered at his business establishment in the Maurapatti area of Chanmari, Fatullah, on May 14.
Eyewitnesses said Sharif went to Nasir’s office, where an argument broke out between the two.
During the altercation, Sharif allegedly attacked Nasir repeatedly with a sharp knife. Despite attempting to defend himself, Nasir sustained critical injuries.
