‘Literacy key to building knowledge-based society ‘
International Literacy Day 2026 was observed in Narayanganj under the theme “Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity.” The Narayanganj district administration organised a colourful rally and discussion meeting on Tuesday morning at the District Commissioner’s Office and its conference room to mark the day.
The rally began from the premises of the District Commissioner’s Office. Government officials, teachers, students and people from various walks of life took part, carrying banners, festoons and placards. The procession passed through the city’s main roads before ending at the conference room of the District Commissioner’s Office.
Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rayhan Kabir attended the discussion as the chief guest. Officials from various government departments, teachers, students, parents and representatives of civil society were also present.
The DC said literacy is not limited to the ability to read and write; rather, it is one of the key foundations for enhancing people’s knowledge, skills, awareness and self-reliance. “Acquiring digital literacy and technical skills has become essential to meeting the challenges of the 21st century,” he said.
He further said the government’s goal is to ensure quality and inclusive education for all.
“We want to build a knowledgeable, skilled and prosperous society by preventing school dropouts, promoting women’s education and strengthening adult education programmes.
Teachers, parents and people from all sections of society must come forward to make this possible,” he said.
Speakers at the discussion said that alongside increasing the literacy rate, ensuring the quality of literacy must also be prioritised.
They called for greater coordination among local government bodies, non-governmental organisations and the media to eliminate illiteracy.
Students from various educational institutions across the district also delivered speeches highlighting the importance of literacy and presented cultural performances at the event.
