One dead, pirate chief held in Sundarbans raid

A man was killed and two suspected members of the notorious Dulabhai pirate gang, including its chief, Robiul Islam, were arrested following an overnight gunfight during a Coast Guard operation in the Moydafesa canal area of the Sundarbans in Koyra, Khulna.

Shawkat Sardar, 60, was declared dead after being taken to Koyra Upazila Health Complex.

Robiul, who sustained bullet injuries, was later transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Another injured gang member, Israfil Hossain, was caught by locals while attempting to flee on Friday.

According to local residents, Shawkat had allegedly been held hostage by the gang and was killed during the exchange of fire.

A forest worker who recently escaped captivity also claimed that Shawkat had been forced to cook for the gang.

The Coast Guard said the suspects opened fire first, prompting personnel to return fire in self-defence.

The force added that operations were continuing to recover illegal arms and apprehend other fleeing gang members.
