40 forest robbers held in Sundarbans in one year

Operation Mangrove Shield, the Coast Guard has conducted a joint operation to curb piracy in the Sundarbans.

In the last year, a total 40 active members of various pirates including Karim Sharafi, Nana Bhai, Choto Suman, Jahangir, Choto Jahangir, Alif and Asabur Bahini have been arrested in regular operations by the Coast Guards.

During this time, a large number of weapons including 43 domestic and foreign firearms, 10 rounds of live ammunition, 186 rounds of live cartridge, 299 rounds of empty cartridges and 2 hand grenades were recovered and several hideouts of bandits were identified and destroyed.

In addition, 37 fishermen, 2 tourists and 1 resort owner have been rescued and handed over to their families. Lt. Commander SabbirAlamSipon, Coast Guard Media Officer of the Western Zone deployed Mongla in Bagerhat district gave this information on Sunday afternoon.

He also said that Coast Guard will continue such joint operations in future to completely free the Sundarbans from the pirates.

He said that under the direct guidance of the Home Minister, the Bangladesh Coast Guard is taking a tough stance against all the pirates active in the Sundarbans region.

As part of this, two special operations named “Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans” and “Operation Mangrove Shield were conducted.”

In continuation of this, a joint patrol was continued in the area, adjacent to the Sundarbanson Sunday by the Coast Guard, Navy, Police and RAB.

In addition, to conducting public awareness activities about forest poachers round the clock patrol activities have been strengthened to maintain communication and ensure their safety.

Coast Guard surveillance of rivers and canals and around the Sundarbans has been greatly increased compared to the past. As a result, piracy in these areas has decreased significantly.
