Maintenance of dredging activities have begun in order to maintain the navigability of the Matarbari Deep Sea Port Channel operated by the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) and ensure safe and uninterrupted ship movement.
Currently, coal-carrying ships are regularly plying through the Matarbari Deep Sea Port Channel. In addition, there is a possibility that LNG-carrying ships will also start plying regularly in the near future.
In recent times, due to excessive sedimentation, navigability has decreased in various places in the channel, making it necessary to maintain the prescribed depth.
In this context, dredging activities have been undertaken on an urgent basis to restore the navigability of the channel and ensure safe navigation of commercial and fuel-carrying ships.
Based on the analysis of the existing morphological condition of the Matarbari Channel and the type of sediment transport, the Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) has been considered the most suitable and effective dredger for such dredging activities.
In continuation of this, dredging activities have started in the Matarbari Channel through TSHD King Copper, owned by a Chinese company. The dredger is working to re-establish and maintain the prescribed depth by removing silt accumulated in different parts of the channel. Matarbari Deep Sea Port is a strategically important infrastructure for the country’s maritime trade, energy security and economic growth.
If the prescribed navigability of the channel is maintained, large-scale commercial, coal-carrying and LNG ships will be able to navigate safely, which will further accelerate the country’s energy supply system and foreign trade activities.
CPA will continue all necessary activities to maintain the navigability of the Matarbari Deep Sea Port Channel with the cooperation of all stakeholders and will remain committed to increasing the efficiency and capacity of the country’s seaport system.
