July Uprising Day observed in Magura
Magura observed July Uprising Day on Wednesday with due respect and solemnity through a series of programmes organised by the district administration.
The day’s events included wreath-laying, a reception for the families of July martyrs and July fighters, discussions highlighting the significance of the day, essay-writing and drawing competitions for children, and special prayers at various religious institutions in memory of the July martyrs.
The July Martyrs’ Memorial Monument adjacent to Dhaka Road Bridge was unveiled at 9:00 am.
Wreaths were placed at the memorial by Magura-1 MP Monowar Hossain Khan, the district administration, police administration, district council, Civil Surgeon’s Office, Magura Government College, Magura Municipality, Magura Press Club.
and representatives of various government and private organizations as well as socio-cultural bodies.
A discussion and reception were held at the Magura Auditorium, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Motakabbir Ahmed, with Magura-1 MP Monowar Hossain Khan attending as the chief guest.
Among the special guests were Superintendent of Police Molla Azad Hossain, District Council Administrator Ali Ahmed, Civil Surgeon Dr. Shamim Kabir and Principal of Magura Government Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Dr. Md. Alfaz Uddin.
Magura District BNP Senior Joint Convener Ahsan Habib Kishore, Municipal BNP President Masud Hasan Khan Kizil, July fighter Shahriar Sadiq, Rabbi’s widow Rumi Khatun, Raju Ahmed’s mother Nasima Khatun and Sumon’s mother Khadija, among others, also addressed the programme.
The speakers said the country had achieved a new Bangladesh through the sacrifices of the July martyrs and pledged never to forget their supreme sacrifice. They demanded the immediate arrest, trial and punishment of those responsible for the killings during the July uprising.
The speakers also called for the swift implementation of the July Charter, saying it would help ensure that the families of the martyrs could live with dignity and pride.
Family members of the martyrs expressed frustration over the delay in securing justice, saying that although two years had passed since their loved ones were killed, they had yet to receive the justice they sought.
They urged the government to expedite the trial of those responsible for the killings during the July uprising.
