Nahid voices concern over Islami Bank
National Citizens Party (NCP) convenor and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam has alleged that there is an attempt to bring Islami Bank PLC (IBL) back under the control of S Alam Group.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Chattogram Circuit House on Friday afternoon.
Nahid Islam said that instead of taking effective action against groups accused of laundering public money abroad, there are efforts to rehabilitate them.
“We are seeing attempts to hand over Islami Bank again to S Alam,” he said, adding that those who allegedly looted public money and laundered funds abroad are not being brought to justice.
Referring to the recent remarks of the finance adviser, he said there has been no clear statement on how such “powerful groups” will be held accountable.
He also expressed concern over the country’s banking sector, saying it is currently in a fragile condition.
“If around 30 million customers and depositors lose confidence in Islami Bank, it will also affect other banks. The entire banking system is in a vulnerable state,” he said.
Nahid Islam further said that the proposed budget does not provide a clear direction for addressing the country’s fragile economic situation.
He added that his party will continue to raise both criticism and proposals inside and outside parliament.
